Re: Which Goertz

Goertz propaganda recommends choosing the width that relates to the max power capability of your amplifier. In other words, they are implying that the narrower ribbon the better the sound but that you need a wider ribbon if your pushing more Watts through it. (Theory again: Eddy currents may be more of a problem as the ribbon gets wider. Who is this "eddy" guy, and why is he such a problem?) So, for my MA240s, which make about 120 to 140W, I have the middle width; I think it's "AG2". And as the name implies, it's silver. I haven't used the silver version long enough to state that there is any difference sonically between silver and copper. I once compared the copper version to my doctored Nordost SuperFlatline (24 feet of each) and found the Nordost to be slightly superior, by a hair, and only AFTER I modified the Nordost. So, the modified Nordost and the copper Goertz are very cost-effective, if you need a long run. When I asked the Goertz folks why they recommend that customers choose the width of the spkr wire based on max power output rather than on actual max power that the spkrs will ever need, they had no good answer. (In other words, you could be driving a 96db-efficient spkr with a 120W amp. In which case you will never, ever need more than a few Watts of power to blow your eardrums, so your amp's max power output is a moot point.)
