Yes, the STBY switch simply switches off the output B+ transformer so that plate voltage on the output tubes falls off. And yes it is possible to create a standby mode that keeps the output B+ voltage up but instead takes the grid voltage low enough to shut off current through the output tubes. But why? I don't see any advantage as a result of the extra parts and time invested.Paul Speltz
