Stanby Function.

I am interested in the Standby function.Does it simply diconnect the output stage supply or does it mute the signal as well via a relay .Is a switching transient introduced upon reconnection of o/p voltage regardless of whether the input sigal is muted or not.Would a standby by function that affects the bias voltage not be a bad idea?Any ideas anyone?
