Not all 12AT7s are created equal, especially with respect to thermionic noise. Even Bugle Boys aren't known for silence. The MP-1s phono stage is a very high gain circuit, just like all other phono stages, so it's very important to select tubes with close matching between the two triodes in a a given tube, minimum thermionic noise and minimum microphonics. You may need to reject a lot of tubes before these all important parameters come together to quiet down your phono stage.Although other tubes will do well, my favorite are Mullard CV 4024s that have been hand selected just as I described. I got my from Kevin Deal. My MP-1's phono stage is almost silent, even with the volume up all the way. The sound is superb.
