Just heard the bad news. My first reaction was that I built my M60 mk.2s over 2 years ago, and they still work great, even after a couple of field upgrades. No hum, no problems. My second reaction was that we, who supported "the movement", took a chance, and lived through many upgrades - some of which were not really necessary and actually hurt the sound - were being abandoned for superficial reasons. The main reason seems to be that A-S is now successful enough they don't have to bother with us die-hards anymore. (Do I sound a little resentful?)I am probably safe in stating that one's attachment to a thing is related to the effort it took to obtain the thing. In the case of A-S kits, owners are much more attached to their amps than owners of other products. "Attached" means they keep the amps longer, put up with more inconvenience (heat), extoll the virtues more vociferously, and probably enjoy the ride just a little more. But eliminating the kit experience reduces this attachment. What this means is that we will see more amps on the used market along with a lowering of prices for used A-S products due to competition.
I think Ralph's business decision sucks. On the other hand, this might not be such a bad thing after all. Why? Because soon I'll probably see factory-built, full-bore M60's with all the extras being sold on the used market for about what I paid for my kits over two years ago!
