Re: 12AT7 & 12AU7 for Atma-Sphere MA60 mkI

I think I have posted this information before; I am beginning to bore myself. Anyway, I experimented extensively with 12AT7s in the driver stage of my MA240s (STILL not in MK II config). I tried the late production 12AT7WA branded Sylvania (green lettering), NOS gold pin Syl 6201s, NOS Mullard CV4024, and Billington Gold E81CC-01. Billington is a British tube vendor, and they have the E81CC-01 made for them in China, or so I am told. The Billington's were and still are the best-sounding 12AT7 I have heard in my input stage. Next came the Syl 6201s (hard to find now), the Syl 12AT7WAs, and then the Mullards, which to my surprise were shrill, perhaps due to microphonics. Mark Gilmore has a different and very favorable experience with the Mullards, I think as used in his pre-amp. You can mail order NOS Mullards AND the Billington Gold tubes from Billington in England. Look for their ad in Glass Audio. As for 12AU7s, the 5814A Siemens is supposed to be very good, as is the French CIFTE (I think). Recently, the type 7316, which I have never previously heard of, was recommended as a drop-in superior replacement for any 12AU7. I bought a pair but have not tried them yet (in the linestage of my MP1, also still in Mk I configuration.)
