Another possibility for high mains voltage (125 VAC) is to wire up an autoformer that reduces the voltage by, oh say 6.3 volts. I've got an old Citation V power amp that expects 117 VAC and it really helped to reduce the voltage coming out of the wall. Its much simpler (and cheaper) than variacs, etc. and practically bullet proof.

I used a Radio shack 6.3V/2A filament transformer which handles the 250 watt Citation just fine - the xformer gets slightly warm after 4 hours.

If you've never wired an autoformer I could reproduce the wiring diagram for you. Its just a case of wiring the primaries and secondaries properly, stick it in an insulated box and put a plug and a cord on it.
