I have been on board with Art and the mag from the beginning. The last two issues reflect the change in publisher, though Art retains editorial rights. It also marks the journal's expansion into a bimonthly, rather than quarterly format. Before the sale, Listener was an irreverent, funny, off-the-wall pleasure, even with Gizmo included (you can, after all, skip his rants and purple prose). The magazine was a nice mix of DIY and good reviews with mostly knowledgable reviewers. So we shall have to wait and see what the future holds.
While I don't react as negatively as you to Peter Breuninger, he is in danger of becoming the Harry Pearson of single-ended triodes, and that would be intolerable. He seems sorely lacking on the technical side and tends toward the pompous in his pronouncments (maybe he has already morphed into HP?).
Herb Reichert is an interesting case. I always enjoyed the column Herb wrote for Sound Practices. I guess I share his philosophical POV. Herb has designed some nice amps, such as a PP2A3 called the Feral Eye (which was partly the inspiration for my current project, a transformer-coupled, parallel feed PP45), and a SE 300B called Flesh and Blood. He casts himself as an artist, as does Fi owner and designer Don Garber. I wouldn't be too anal about what J-10 has to say - consider the source (whoops, back to pompous again).
So he cleans the stylus with his finger. I clean mine with jeweler's emory paper - not a lot of difference. Remember Ivor's matchbooks? I don't turn the system down simply to change an LP either. Maybe that gets me drummed out of the corps, too.
Of course, Herb tends to focus on the emotional content of the music and not the traditional "audiophool" paranoias like cable direction, pucks and dots. Which is why he is such a refreshing read. Listener does much the same, and will hopefully continue in that vein. With the demise of Sound Practices, we are left with Art and Dan Schmalle's cyberVALVE as the only thing worth reading at all.
