Now this is a bit different. Please forgive me for assuming you have the MK II version. The MK I uses 12AT7s. It's my opinion the MK I version has too much gain anyway. Removing what's called V2 will certainly help. Yes, you must both remove the tube and install the jumpers. Again, V2 is the top tube in the cascode. This will turn the input stage into a differential pair. Your friend is correct. THe jumpers must go between pins 1 & 3 and 6 & 8.
