1. The chips will fail and there aren't any more.
2. The stock unit was totally uninvolving sonically and not worth pursuing. I really mean it. I'm not a "golden ears" type. It was just plain mediocre. If someone gives one to you, or will take $50 for it, OK. As a DVD player, it was quite nice. My unit failed after two years, after the chips were no longer available. Even if they had been available, I would not have spent money fixing it. I should have known that when a company tries to dump a unit like that on the public, they know something is wrong. I paid $400 at Tweeters. Luckily, I found a Sony CE775 for $89 at Best Buy that sounds a lot better on SACD than the stock SACD1000.
