The reason for format wars is that the winner wins bigtime. Look at Philips with the cassette.Sometimes it pays to share (Philips and Sony with the CD) and sometimes it doesn't. It depends on whether you think you'll win. If you think you'll win, and you do, then you get 100% of the royalties. If you don't think you'll win the format war, then it pays to compromise and get just a fraction.
