Home Hi-Rez Highway

New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Unfortunately, you'll find...

...that most of the "high end" audio stores will not offer a fair demo of SACD, nor will they have an unbiased view of it. You may get discouraged by what you hear - from the salespeople, that is. The reasons for this have been discussed here before. But, basically, it is not in their best financial interest to support the SACD format at this time.

Your best bet might be to just take the plunge and purchase an SACD player (with an option to return it, of course) from a on-line discounter such as Oade Bros. (they have a very good reputation with many inmates) and demo SACD where it counts - at home in your own system. If you just want a taste of the format without making a large investment, purchase an inexpensive Sony unit from Best Buy or Circuit City. What the hell - you can always return it if you don't like it.

As far as software, why not purchase a few hybrid SACDs from Tower Records, Best Buy, or on-line dealers such as Music Direct? They really only cost a few dollars more than their CD counterparts. And if you decide that SACD is not for you, you can still play them in any CD player.

BTW: If you are primarily interested in jazz or classical music, you'll love SACD - there are plenty of good titles already released. If you favor more popular forms of music, you may want to wait a while to avoid frustration. (Just my two cents)
