Headphones can give you a pretty good sense of "images", albeit shrunken ones. "Soundstage" (width, depth, stereo) and is the thing that is most compromised in headphone listening. Loudspeaker listening brings you imaging and soundstaging in a unified package, while headphone don't. What you get with headphones is "headstage" even though the size of the headstage appears varies. Some people seem to hardly even notice it, while others are severely distracted by it. Some people have a hard time "believing" in images unless they are of a certain size. I suspect that, for a person like you, a product such as the Smyth Realiser might be the only way to move forward.
