I know this is a fairly personal question, but here it is:Do you normalize tracks in a sampler? (and more importantly, how do you do it?)
I have this problem when I make long samplers on a DVD-A, even if I have 7 or 8 CDs that go well together, the volume and dynamics vary dramatically. The only solution I have found so far is to use only records that were mastered/remastered at the same period, and on the same label (eg: all Roxy Music JHDCD remasters have similar volume and dynamics), or use a full box set. Sometimes even a few years' difference on the same label will create significant differences in the volume of the CDs (eg ECM).
What's the best option for this? Normalizing tracks using peak information, or adjust to an average RMS level?
What are the dangers of this method (dynamics or clipping)?
What are the best tools for this kind of manipulation?Any link to a primer on this, any help or comment will be much appreciated.
Best
Eric
