"What are DVD-A's formats/resolutions?"

Anything equal to or above 16-bit 48kHz can be put onto DVD-A. Most material is 96kHz 24-bit but the format can go to 192kHz 24-bit in two-channel.

"Do all DVD-A discs have a DD5.1 compatable layer?"

No, but most do. And the backward compatible layer when provided only needs to be DVD-Video compatible, so that could mean two-channel Dolby Digital or even PCM.

"Also, how can you tell from the packaging?"

It's tricky. Check the review sites. Things are improving though with Warner's Info Grid.

"What's with the "DTS entertainment" discs -they have the same oversized jewel cases as DVD-A, but I suspect they are not DVD-A rez."

Some are DVD-Audio, look for the logo, but others are lossy DTS music discs. It annoyed everyone when the company started using the same type of packaging (see link to 5.1 Entertainment article in post above). But that's DTS for you. Masters of smoke and mirrors.
