I agree with you 100%! There is far too much emphasis put on the 'gear'. The variables of room acoustics alone will put the whack on the best 'gear'. The perfect gear in the perfect room is that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It's impossible to get on an objective analysis on something that is purely subjective. The most important thing to me is whether I'm enjoying the music; not whether this or that will possibly put my music into the next level. My listening enjoyment is in constant flux. One day a certain passage of music will move me to tears (literally) of joy. Another day it may just be humdrum. Nothing has changed electronically; only my emotional state at the time.
But for some the journey is more important than the destination.
But then that's just me.
