with two HUGE advantages over DVD-A for the typical Bose Acoustimass-loving general public:(1) full motion video
(2) discs with labels one can actually read without a magnifying glass ! (i.e. my eyes aren't what they used to be). I had to squint very carefully to figure out which layer was on which side of the hi-rez Music "Soular energy" DVD-A. I am definitely not a fan of "flipper" discs. I'm not sure Joe Sixpack is going to appreciate the sonic differences well enough to put up with the hassle of figuring out which side of the disc to play.
Of course, there is an assumption being made that the DVD consortium can keep up with a viable standard for hybrid DVD-A/CDs. This has not happened yet and may never happen do to potential compatibility issues with all the CD players out there.... we shall see...
