I have only listened to them in DD (new player next week) so I can't attest to the sound. The performances are excellent.Barenboim's Beethoven is amongst the best recorded even in DD. The orchestra plays beautifully and the parts are very easy to pick out with the strings blended very well. The typmpani are startling on all the symphonies. There just isn't a weak spot. The video on the disk shows there to be many young players and several women. Opera recordings with this same Berlin Staatskapelle and Barenboim are also getting great reviews.
The Mehta Mahler is possibly one of the best performances as well. Many might prefer Bernstein but it's right up there. The DD surround is quite good and I am looking forward to the DVD-A side soon.
These are flipper discs (DD/DVD-A). See Lars B site for more info and ClassicsToday for performance reviews.
