Those of us who were or are drummers know what drums sound like. The 13-piece kit that I used to have in the '80s used blue Evans Hydraulics drum heads ($!). None of my REAL drums used tape, pads or any other deadening material. However, they weren't boomy and didn't ring as long as a cymbal either. It comes down to the sound that you like or, in some cases, the sound that the producer likes. If you like boomy and seemingly neverending resonance, so be it. But that doesn't mean the sound is more "real" -- it's just a different flavor.
