Niconico / audio gaps - An official response from Minnetonka Audio

Following the various questions from Niconico (see link) and others about "audio gaps" in DVD-A authored using discWelder Steel, I had offered Minnetonka to come over and respond.

I received the following response from Minnetonka. Part of it is a response to Niconico's criticism on audio gaps, but it contains some interesting information about the technical reason for audio gaps in DVD-Audio, so I'll post it as a new message.

I wish all audio software companies had such a good customer service.

Hi Eric,
Sorry it took awhile to respond, we're a bit too busy here at the moment...
To answer the question in your forum about playback gaps in DVD-Audio
discs, Mr. "niconico" needs to understand the DVD-A specification. The
DVD-A player loads the ASVs (still images) for each track before it plays
the track. Some players are faster than others, which is why some have a
smaller gap. There are three ways around this problem:
1) Make the entire DVD-A as a single MLP encode, then use track pointers to
make the separate "Tracks";
2) Turn off the ASV loading (the "slides" or stills) in Sonic Solutions'
DVD-A Creator
3) Preload the ASVs, which is what discWelder CHROME does.
SO - the problem is not in discWelder STEEL (which doesn't even support
ASVs), or ANY authoring program - the problem is in the DVD-A player
specification.
STEEL is still a terrific bargain, and if Mr. "niconico" wishes to upgrade
to CHROME from a registered copy of STEEL, have him contact us - we can do
that for him (he won't lose any money in the transaction).
Thanks and best wishes,
John
