Thanks I'll try that (looks like about 4 points to desolder). Then also maybe a small brass screw on the top of the spindle motor.

Looks like I don't have to remove the flat black disk (that spins the dvd)? I was concerned primarily with how to remove that as it appears to on pretty tight.

I'm still waiting for my part to arrive so I'm hoping that this is worth the effort.
