Chuck Ainlay , engineer for Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler , compares PCM and DSD , and he prefers ... PCM . ...

In an excellent highfidelityreview.com article , dated November 22 , 2005 , Chuck Ainlay compares PCM and DSD , and clearly states , several times , that he prefers PCM .

With regards to Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms , which he mixed for release on DualDisc with DVD-A , and on SACD , Ainlay says " I do prefer the 24-bit Meridian Lossless Packing DVD-Audio ( on the DualDisc ) over the DSD hybrid SACD version " .

Ainlay says that when he mixed Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La to a DSD Sonoma system " we felt that it altered the sound to some degree , whereas the 96/24 LPCM ( using a Nuendo system ) was more representative of the original mix straight out of the console " . He also thought that the 15 IPS one-inch analogue tape version was better than the DSD version .

Ainlay concludes his comments with " We feel there is an inescapable 'softening' effect which DSD imparts . So going forward now , we have basically determined that we prefer 96kHz/24-bit PCM for recording over the Sonoma DSD " .
