dvd a player set up - newbie

I am new to dvd audio. I have a denon 2910 universal dvd player and a denon 2805 receiver. when I connect the two via analog cables (R and L), it plays fine in stereo out of all 5 speakers, but no discrete 5 channel sound. I figured I needed to connect with digital coax cable, so I ran it from the coax out of the player to the coax 1 input on the receiver, but then I get no sound. I tried setting the receiver to dvd-dts and to cd, but no luck. WHat do I need to do to enjoy multi-channel dvd audio?
