We totally endorse the Benchmark DAC1. On the unit you have an AES in, SPDIF digital in on a BNC, as well as an optical in. The output of the DAC1 goes directly into your power amp, not your pre-amp. Volume is then controlled from the DAC1.Obviously minimizing the electronics between the source and the playback will give outstanding fidelity.
