there's a fairly significant step up in quality (to my ears at least, on the equipment i own) going from 16-bit recordings to 24-bit, probably more than that gained by increasing the sample rate.i have been recording my LPs at 44.1/24, and i notice a step down in quality when i downconvert to 44.1/16 to burn a CD.
