It's an August 2003 build . . .

. . yes, there were issues with that build date. Firmware updating fixes most of them. (Note: you may already have fairly recent firmware, depending on when it was delivered to you, and by whom.)

N.B. Also DO make sure that Denon check-out the laser/transport power issue, as discussed here:-

If that's an issue with your machine, then no amount of firmware updating will fix it. You will then need the physical component modification, which in itself is a fairly simple fix, but it needs to be done.

(I suspect my first 2003-build DVD-5900/-A11 model I was testing did have the laser problem because it gave me white noise on some DADs, and would not play one or two DVD-A. Now, my 2004-build replacement plays everything fine.)
