Interpolation in hardware: you mean, let that do the CD-Player, right?
Well, that was my initial thought as well. But which interpolation is better? The one, a DVD/CD-player does, or a computer? If I do it with the computer and use a good algorithm, then the "bad" CD-Player would not have to resample but is fed with a very good resampled signal already and would only have to do the Digital-to-Analogue processing.
Talking about archiving, you are right, of course. If I can really achieve a 1:1 copy of a 44.1/16 CD, then everything is open for future hardware-techniques. So it's all up to the archiving tools - use any of the 1:1 image-copy tools like Nero, that copy bit by bit, or use tools like Exact Audio Copy, that extract to wav and then burn wav's?
