Why not just perform the interpolation process in hardware, from the original 16/44 PCM? It's not as if processing power is at a premium today. A well configured audio-PC will do this readily.

In terms of future-proof archiving, a 16/44 disc would be more robust, and rather than commiting the recording to whatever over-sampling or interpolation algorithms this system uses, you could leave it open to possibly better solutions which may yet be devised.
