Analog clipping behaves differently from digital clipping. Digital clipping is easy to spot because you have hit 0dB FS.
Analog clipping depends on many factors, including the behaviour of the signal just before and just after the clipping point. It is possible for analog clipping to be sampled at various levels.
However, on this instance i happen to agree with you. It is far more likely for the cause to be a peak limiting circuit in Eric's soundcard. However, the possibility of the clipping happening in the signal path cannot be completely discounted.
