New software: copy CDs to DVD with 96kHz/24bit resolution

Hi
I just stumbled over two new programs, that do copy CDs and create Audio-DVDs with 24bit/96kHz.
One comes from the developers of the backup-software DVD2One and is called DVD+Audio (find it here: http://www.eximius.nl/
It claims to not only just resample the CD-signal to 96kHz and change the resolution to 24bit, but to re-create the information that was lost due to the limits of the 44.1kHz/16bit resolution.
The other software is called AUDIO DVD CREATOR (find it here: http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com/)
This program also is able to convert CDs to 96kHz/24bit and create a DVD - but they do not make claims about recreating lost information.

Both programs also do have the abiliy to save the CDs onto DVD in other formats like AC3, MP1, MP2 or other sampling rates - just have a look at their specifications.
The common to both: they do NOT create DVD-AUDIO - they actually create LPCM and mux it into a virtual "movie" containing just one picture for the whole length of the DVD. So you end up with the usual VOBs and IFOs, which every DVD-Player can reproduce.

What would be most interesting to me: how do you rate the sound-quality of these products? Are they just one more possibility to backup a CD or does the resampling process actually preserve a better quality than just making a 1:1 copy to CD-R? Especially interesting could be, whether the "resolution enhancement" of DVD+Audio does produce a better sound-quality than the original CD. Here is the quote from their website:

The heart of the program consists of two engines:

  • Extremely precise sample rate convertor. Resamples 44.1kHz CD-Audio to the 48kHz or 96kHz used on DVD.
  • Revolutionary resolution enhancement. Extends the 16 bit used on CD to the DVD compliant 24 bits.
Combining both engines, a DVD+Audio easily surpasses CD quality, and in the resulting sounds you can enjoy better imaging, clearer detail, deeper and tighter bass and a overal better sound experience.

Unlike other resamplers, that base their processing on mathematical functions (for instance bessel), our processing is based on musical information and the knowledge that the original master contains more detail than the CD. Therefor when you analyse the resulting waveforms using conventional methods, the measurements may be different than you expect. The only proper way to test it is with your ears, not with your eyes.

So, what do you think - is to worth to try out? It all comes down to LISTEN to the results... They do have trials on their website, so we could exchange our experiences here.

    Joerg
