I've bought every title (except Fiddle Faddle) released prior to June. Abravanel and the Utah Orchestra are the stars here, and the Brahms #1, Brahms #2 & 3 and Mahler #1 are just plain outstanding. Pierre Monteux conducts Tchaikovsky gets the same rating. Unfortunately, the Vaughan Williams #6 isn't in the same league as the Hickox on Chandos and the wonderfully played Swan Lake is marred by inexplicable pauses between chapters. Some may find the low bass to be an issue in many of these Vanguard recordings, and I'm looking forward to the Artemis Classics SACD releases to hear how the bass is handled. I assume that the subsonics are an artefact of early analogue technology, perhaps due to modulation with the wow in the tape recorder (can anyone elaborate on this?).
