Daniel:I owned the Denon DVD 2900 and I now own the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi. Both have a street price well under $1,000 USD including shipping and handling fees. The Denon DVD 2900 is a great universal player and it sounds slightly forward but fairly neutral and balanced in its' stock form. It is eligible for aftermarket modifications by ModWright LLC, eXemplar Audio, UnderWood HI-FI, etc. I decided to sell it to get the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi. Here are some of the reasons why I made this decision:
Red Book CD performance:
HiBit (16 - 20 bit to 24bit upconvertor)
Legato PRO (44.1 - 48KHz to 176.4 - 192KHz)
Four custom filters to change the tone and color of the soundSA-CD Two Channel and Multi-Channel with NO DSD -> PCM Conversion
DVD-Audio: Two channel and Multi Channel
Three Burr Brown DACs
DVD-Video with internal video upscaler and HDMI 1.0
~ 12.5 pounds
$1,000 USD or less (easily by today's date)
I am an audiophile headphone nut. I do not own speakers but I do have a headphone amplifier and earphones. I would characterize the Denon DVD 2900 as being polite and unoffensive while the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi is dark, warm, and liquid; it is meant to stir you with its sound.
Of course, careful auditioning and system synergy are paramount. Please consider the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi.
