Low level resolution absent in DSD?

I'm a recording engineer, and I do mostly classical and jazz. Maybe this has been discussed before, but it seems that almost every "pure DSD" recording that I have heard (mostly Telarc) has a loss of low level detalil under a certain threshold. It's like the orchestra disappears until a certain dB level is reached. I have no axe to grind in the DSD vs. PCM debate (other than the rediculous cost of DSD software and editing systems), but I'm curious to know if any of you have experienced the same thing? I have been told that this could be a result of the ultrasonic noise that's inherent in the DSD process. What say you?

Mike
