Without getting into more intensive mods, simply replacing the glass fuse in the Toshiba (I am assuming it is similar to my 430V) that is located on the power supply board close to where the power cord enters the unit with a ceramic (250V 1.6A 20mm. fuse) will significantly flesh things out and alleviate that brightness. Getting rid of the nickel plated male on the power cord and replacing it with something like a Marinco 5266 will also help out. Without spending a lot of money you can do things like this which will really improve the player:
