Gates propped up Apple to prevent MS from being labeled a monopoly. Ensuring the future of Apple meant (at the time) their would always be a viable alternative to MS, thus no monopoly. But at that time (early mid- 90's) MS was effectively a monopoly. Apple recovered, and the Clinton era justice dept launched an investigation into MS that eventually caused a change in direction for the co and led Gates into pulling back from day to day management. The genesis of the later is rumored to be a snub of Clinton by Gates when Clinton was trolling for money in Silicon Valley.
