Black dot/narrow stripe = negative.

What wattage is your iron? 30 to 40 W would be ideal. Give the iron time to get nice and hot before stripping. The trick (assuming you have a hot enough iron): melt solder where the iron meets the wire. Should burn off pretty quick. Give the iron time to heat up again before doing the next wire.

I have assumed that these resistors are different than the 1Kohm resistors which used to ship with the kit, and consequently I have used them in place of the brown, black, black, brown, brown ones which the manual mentions.
I got the same 1Ks. Probably carbon comps. They shouldn't be a problem at all. When in doubt of value, measure with a VOM.
