Just looking at 'bulk efficiency' you've got a point.
But what about a 5 watt class 'A' amp.......which might draw 25 watts or so......most of the time.???
It might make more sense to limit total power consumtption of an amp, regardless of class of operation. And add in the idea of duty cycle, so you can get away with maybe 2x rate for 10 minutes per hour? Some of the electric brain types will figure this out.
And please don't forget that while a 'D' amp can be over 90% efficient, that is at full output.
Efficiency drops as a function of power output.
One last point? Speakers are seldom over 5% or 6% efficient. This is a floor under the entire 'plug to speaker' chain / efficiency....
