Resistor ladder. I've had that and now the three in/two out unit. I bought is used and it became intermittent. I contacted Guy the owner who said send it in we get almost no claims I will fix it free. He even offered to switch the nude vishay values for a more linear volume control based on my gear. That's service. It's a grand. Chang light speed would be my lower cost recommendation.
