CAT preamp

69.200.82.208

One of the happiest moves I have made was putting a CAT (Convergent Audio Technology) tube preamp in my system. Found an earlier one supposed to have been upgraded to MKII. Sounds great, it's pretty neutral (no syrup or darkness hear), has just that right amount of tube midrange magic and accentuation of ambience on good recordings (the things I note the most about what tubes do.) Does not sound "slow" (read: undamped) or lacking in the bass. Just my thought. A friend of mine has the latest Ultimate, and it's another step above, and I would recomend it, but if you are on a budget, used ones do pop up.

Tube preamps I have had include Audilble Illusions Modulas 3, Transcendent Sound Grounded Grid (way more transparent than the Aud. Illusions), and SAS Audio Labs 10A (another very nice preamp for not a lot of money, almost settled on one, but liked the CAT better.)
