Re: Quad ESL 57's - are they worth it? Building new system

They are absolutely worth the $1K price, but they will most likely require some work to perform at original spec. You might be lucky enough to find a set for that price that is in good operating condition, i.e. no arcs, rattles, buzzes, etc., but they will no longer perform as originally delivered. Nothing that old is going to work at original spec.

The ESL has few peers, and most of what you have heard about the ESL is correct. Whether the ESL is the speaker for you is another matter. I would suggest a listen, if possible, before you invest in the ESL. And you might as well plan on spending some money to get the speaker working correctly.

If you are looking for a speaker that does the midrange about as well as can be done, can live with some limitations in the dynamic capability and bass extension(no worse than most planars IMO), and don't mind spending $2-3K ultimately to get the ESL at her best, then yes the ESL is a bargain. If not, I would look elsewhere. The ESL can be the finest thing you have ever experience, or one of the biggest pains you can imagine.
