Thank you all. To clarify I am using a gateway FX desktop -usb dac (idsd) direct to quicksilver M60s - to the ETs. Last weekend I experimented with the direct output of the dac, the 2 preamp outputs of the dac and an audible illusions preamp. The direct output won - the preamps provided the extra volume, dynamics, and focus, but when I removed the preamp the transparency, detail, 3d holographic imaging and broad soundstage returned. Again, my only issue is with blu-rays - with cds and dvds I'm fine with only a bit of attenuation. To my ears the boost option of mpc hc does not clip or negatively affect the sound quality (the normalize/regain volume option did), but I may be missing something, and that is my primary concern in writing this post. Another option would be to find other software which provides greater output without boosting - I tried jriver and it is the same volume level as mpc. Of course the simplest option is to play dvds and avoid blu-rays altogether. Another option is to replace my amps, but I spent decent money modifying them and I love their sound. Again, thank you for the education and food for thought - any final comments would be welcome.
