I've wondered exactly the same thing.

One thing they won't do in this form is tune out floor and ceiling reflections like a line array. A full-height line array should I think completely eliminate vertical room modes. However, it's easy with woofers to space them out to create a line array, you just want them to be spaced less than half a wavelength apart from one another and from their reflected images (the spatial Nyquist frequency). So forex two woofers, each 1/4 of the room height from the ceiling and floor.

This would also make it harder to create a passive SBA by sitting the same distance from the rear as the woofers are from the front.
