Perhaps we are just a little more touched in the head. Nah, I don't think the answer is lower grade XO components either - pretty standard fare (from what little I've seen). I think it might have something to do with the performance/cost ratio, which is quite high for Maggies. Couple that with forums such as this and the tweak meme spreads like a wild fire (or does it?).
Your question was general with respect to Maggies, but I think you might find it to be more specific - how many posts have you read about tweaked 20.1s (beyond Al’s recommended RF filters), or even 3.6s? On the other end of the scale, the MMGs get hacked and altered with abandon - this is a direct result of their being rather inexpensive. The owners of MMGs who upgrade to other models have been exposed to the gateway drug and begin contemplating the tweakery of their newly acquired speakers, but if that model is significantly more expensive, their tweaks are often far less aggressive. (Then there's Andy ;-)
Dumping passive XOs in favor of active with amps dedicated to each driver can be found with all speaker types. It's just a good practice, especially once the number of drivers exceeds two and XO complexity rises.
These forums also give an unrealistic view of the landscape. The tweakers are a vocal lot who like to share their experiences - spread the word, as it were. I would bet that for every one of us loonies who rips apart our speakers and rebuilds them in the name of better sound, there are dozens of members who don't get infected with the meme. Look outside of this forum to the general ownership and that ratio drops radically.
This begs the question: Are Maggies modded more than box speakers? It seems to be true that they are modded more than other planars, but is that nothing more than a function of greater numbers? In any case, all we can do is speculate on your good question. Quite frankly, I have no idea - so, why did I waste your time with my reply?
