If you're planning to remodel the room, you might want to consider contacting a consulting firm (Rives, for example) and have them recommend treatments and construction. The consulting does cost extra, but you can save a LOT by going the DIY route with treatment (but that's only truly effective if you've got someone giving you specs).
As for room treatment choice, I was one of the first people to try out GIK D1 diffusers. They're a great deal, but to make them realy work well, you have to add constrained layer damping or stuff them with acoustic foam so they don't resonate like plastic buckets.
I bought the ASC StudioTraps and SoundPanels used on Audiogon just because the deal was too good to pass up. They're effective, but ASC at retail is VERY expensive. Jum Treanor has had great luck with ASC products; you can search here for his room setup.
IME, GIK acoustics delivers the best value for the money, but you sacrifice some aesthetic quality and ease of use. RealTraps products cost more, but they're very slick, and the mounting couldn't be easier.
Hope that helps!
