RE: HELP for new inmate before buying Magnepan SMGa

We all owe the SMGa a debt of gratitude for providing us with what I and many think is the best XO a maggie can have, however looked at in economic and performance terms, it may not be your best buy.

1- They are all now getting so old that if it hasn't "gone green" and is delaminating, it has "gone red" which means you could have a tweeter failure at any time. (especially if you upgrade it's performance) Even if you go and listen and it sounds fine, it could be massively delaminating.

I would ask him to remove the back cover plates, pull the socks up, and look in with a flashlight to see what color it's in and if any wires are coming off. This visual inspection is the only way to evaluate them, listening won't reveal problems. Still, if you can evaluate your amp on them as well by all means do so.

2- Used MMG's generally won't have these delam issues, and with modding may actually exceed the SMGa's performance due to the QR tweeters. Given that they can be had for $300-350 and that price is so close to what the SMGa tends to go for it might be more prudent to put your money there.

That said, if you have no short term plans to mod your speakers I'd go with the SMGa (assuming you inspect it thoroughly as I said) and it shows no issues, because stock it is better sounding than the MMG, IMHO.

Good luck.
