<< not ASR Emitter (despite the WAY overbloated reputation TAS gave this amp it is not that good in fact) >>Intrigued by all the good things HP had to say about this amp, I went out of my way to hear it one time in Hong Kong. It was one of those buildings in MongKok that had about 8 different dealers, one on each floor. We were there to see the Ayre dealer, but I noticed that one of the other floors had the ASR Emitter.
So I go up to the respective floor on the elevator. The "store" was a single room about 9' x 11'. There was a desk with a telephone to do business. There was only one system:
A stock Sony SCD-1
An ASR Emitter with two optional battery packs (I think there was one for each preamp channel, while the power section ran off the AC mains.)
A small pair of (French) Reference 3A speakers quite near the middle of the room. The listening chair (one only!) was only a few feet from the speakers and quite close to the wall. This system sounded fabulous! Clearly the guy had tweaked it within an inch of its life. He must have spent months fine-tuning everything. It was coherent and musical, with a purity I've only heard on a handful of occasions in my life.
Bottom line -- I don't think you can put the ASR Emitter into just any old system and have it work, but in the proper context it can do some amazing things. Maybe those limitations keep it off your recommended list, and I can understand that. Especially at that price -- something approaching $25K with those extra battery supplies. But still a fascinating product in my book.
