You don't necessarily need to treat your room like mine, but room treatment makes your speakers disappear, evens out bass response, and creates sharp, holographic images.
Room treatment does seem pricey, but consider how much you spend on the rest of your system. In my opinion, the room is second only to speakers in the impact on sound. Blinds and ficus trees do have some effect, but they hold nothing to products designed to diffuse or absorb sound waves.
I'm a big fan of the RealTraps wall stands, which let you mount their panels (either absorption or diffusion) on a surface like, say, a glass wall. I use one against a sliding glass door.
