Can you describe what you did to the SL input in more detail? I cannot follow your description. (1) You removed all x-over components and the mixer box. Yes? (2) You inserted a 2R/40W resistor IN PARALLEL with the inputs to the treble transformer. Is that correct? Do you have the toroid or the EI-type treble transformer? (3) After the steps 1 and 2, you lost me. Are you bi-amplifying? If so, I think I can understand what you did. I can't see how your scheme works without bi-amplification, but without the mixer box, how the heck do you make two transformers work?
The M-L CLS is an excellent driver with bad electronics, in my view. The first version has a nice high input Z suitable for tube amps, and it sounded great in the mid-range. All subsequent versions had very difficult impedance curves for tubes, and they never really fixed that up to the IIz version. I don't know what they've done in the last 10 years. The CLS audio transformer is puny compared to any of the SL audio transformers.
