In some rooms the four small subs might not be practical in the idealized scattered configuration, but I think they'd still probably have an acoustic advantage over one or two subs placed more conventionally.For instance, two small subs could go behind the dipole panels (there's some under-utilized real estate there), and maybe the two others alongside the panels up against the side walls (there's probably some available real estate there too).
An equivalent internal volume single subwoofer would be a cube roughly 21 inches on a side, which may or may not be easier to place - depends on the specific room situation.
