Greetings everyone,I'm new to the forum, so I'll probably have lots of questions in the next few weeks. I'm upgrading my system - vinyl playback first.
1) The tone arm lift mechanism on my Akito slips, is there a way to tighten/secure this? It's loose in the outer cylinder, so I've just put some cardboard underneath to support it.
2) Would a Grado Reference Sonata cartridge be a good candidate as a replacement for my K9? Other suggestions?
Speakers: B&W 604S2
Headphone: AKG K701
Denon DRA-685 receiver (modest, but seems OK)I listen to mostly classical music btw.
Follow Ups:
Try an Audio Note IQ-2, see review. I have listened to a friend's rega P3 with this cart, it sounded very nice, easily beating the K18 that it replaced (cheaper too). Would be a good choice if you are limited to MM cartridges only, assuming your receiver only has MM phono input. Should work with Akito I or II.Regards,
Jeff
Jeff,Thanks for the info; mine's just marked "Akito", so I assume it's an Akito I. Thanks for giving me the beta on the Audio Note IQ-2; I'll follow up on that.
The Akito arm (either the first production Akito or the Akito II) should have an allen key set screw just above the arm lift lever. You can simply raise the cylinder, then tighten the screw. simple.I have used both the Ortofon Kontrapunkt B and MC15 super Mk II, as well as K-5, K-9 and Audio Technica OC-9 with good results. I tried a Grado Red and Black, but the sound with either was just too forward and grainy with the Axis... IMHO...

GREAT GEAR DESTROYER!!!
Thanks Dman - I couldn't tell that it was a hex screw (eyes are getting old); so that's fixed. The suggestions for cartridges is also helpful.
No problem on the tip!BTW, to venture an opinion on carts, the Ortofon Kontra was the BEST cart I've ever had on my Axis. the 'table WILL handle it (some nay-sayers don't agree, but I've heard it!), especially if you use some form of isolation platform, but thats another story for another time... I really liked the OC-9 on mine, and have thought about gettting another as a spare, but with all the styli that have been reported to fall off lately, well, thats just scary...
